Day 13 of 40 (Español abajo) "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." Beyond the physical risks of walking across the desert are the potential emotional traumas along the path. Surviving is difficult, which means that both migrants and humanitarians will occasionally come across someone who has not survived their attempt to cross the desert. As difficult as this is, most people will readily say that they would rather come across someone who has died than for that person not to be found. As one humanitarian who hikes out often put it, “The possibility of bringing closure to a family is so important. The pain of what it is like to not know what happened to a loved one is tremendous. For some people that pain lasts forever, they never know.” For humanitarians these encounters are difficult, and for migrants they can sometimes be even more difficult, reminding them of their own mortality at a time when they truly are walking through the valley of the shadow of death.
