Day 14 of 40 (Español abajo) Hope. It may appear fragile, delicate and transparent; yet, it is the strongest force on earth. It is an act of defiance in the face of death and despair. It is the belief that things can be better, if not for ourselves then for our children. That force, that belief, that conviction is what leads migrants into the desert. That is what leads them to risk their own lives in order to improve the lives of those they hold most dear. They believe that this God they love “has plans to prosper and not to harm them, to give them a future with hope.” So often, we hear the stories of suffering and violence and poverty and struggle. What can get lost in facing what people are fleeing from is the reality of what they are fleeing towards. 1 Corinthians tells us, “These three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” At the end of the day, these three are what lies at the root of all courageous acts. These three are woven together: the faith that there is a better plan, the hope that we will see it come to pass, and the love that makes us satisfied if it is only our children who will see it. As we have passed through this first part of our journey in the desert, may we move forward with eyes that see the hope behind the struggle.
Día 14 de 40 La esperanza puede parecer frágil, delicada y transparente; sin embargo, es la fuerza más fuerte en la tierra. Es un acto de desafío frente la muerte y la desesperación. Es la creencia de que las cosas pueden ser mejores, ya sea para nosotros mismos o nuestros hijos. Esa fuerza, esa creencia, esa convicción es lo que lleva a los inmigrantes al desierto. Eso es lo que los lleva a arriesgar sus propias vidas para mejorar las vidas de aquellos que aprecian más. Creen que este Dios que aman "tiene planes para prosperar y no para dañarlos, para darles un futuro con esperanza." Muy a menudo, escuchamos las historias de sufrimiento, violencia, pobreza y lucha. Lo que puede perderse es la realidad de aquello a lo que están huyendo. 1 Corintios nos dice: "Estos tres permanecen: fe, esperanza y amor." Pero el mayor de estos es el amor." Al final del día, estos tres son lo que está en la raíz de todos los actos valientes. Estos tres están entrelazados: la fe de que hay un plan mejor, la esperanza de que veamos que se cumpla, y el amor que nos satisface si solo nuestros hijos lo verán. Al pasar esta primera parte de nuestro viaje en el desierto, podemos avanzar con ojos que vean la esperanza detrás de la lucha.
