Day 22 of 40 (Español abajo) In Matthew 25:36, Jesus says, “I was in detention, and you came to me.” This week, on Wednesday, March 7, Alejandra Pablos, a woman who has served as a constant advocate for young people in Tucson and throughout the world, was taken into custody. In another clear act of retaliation against activists, she was arrested in Tucson following a protest in DC, when she went in for her regular ICE check-in. Her arrest has impacted us deeply. She is a tremendous leader to so many youth, young adults, and students: she is integral in helping undocumented and DACA youth understand their rights and know how to fight for access to the resources needed to be successful in education and beyond. The organization she works with, Mijente, is dedicated to lifting up all those that the world pushes down, and student organizations like Scholarships A-Z, and the UA Immigrant Student Resource Center have been able to count on her support of our Tucson students. As her friend, Jessica Rodriguez, describes her, “If there is someone out there who is constantly thinking, and fighting for liberation it is Ale. Ale doesn’t only put her mouth where her mind is, but her body as well. Ale will do anything to protect and fight with those who are oppressed by capitalism, white supremacy, and racism.” For those who seek to be in solidarity, she brings direction and motivation: “She doesn't let you get comfortable, that's for sure. Ale is constantly challenging folks to do something each day.” Today marks Alejandra’s 4th day in detention, and those who support her are able to think of little else. Esta semana, el miércoles 7 de marzo, Alejandra Pablos, una mujer que ha sido una constante defensora de los jóvenes en Tucson y de todo el mundo fue puesto bajo custodia. En otro claro acto de represalias contra activistas, fue arrestada en Tucson luego de una protesta en DC, cuando ingresó para su registro regular de ICE. Su arresto nos ha impactado profundamente. Es una gran líder para tantos jóvenes, adultos y estudiantes: su apoyo es integral para los jóvenes indocumentados y DACA a comprender sus derechos y saber cómo luchar por el acceso a los recursos necesarios para tener éxito en la educación y más allá. La organización con la que trabaja, Mijente, está dedicada a levantar a todos aquellos que el mundo empuja hacia abajo, y organizaciones estudiantiles como Becas A-Z y el Centro de Recursos para Estudiantes Inmigrantes de la UA han podido contar con su apoyo a nuestros estudiantes de Tucson. Ale no solo pone su boca donde está su mente, sino también su cuerpo. Ale hará cualquier cosa para proteger y luchar contra aquellos que están oprimidos por el capitalismo, la supremacía blanca y el racismo."
