Day 6 of 40 (Español abajo) Since July of 2002, the hiking boots of the Samaritans have been hitting the trails of the Sonoran desert regardless of whether it is a chilly February morning or a blisteringly hot July day. Hiking the same rugged terrain as their brother and sister migrants, they hope that they can offer relief & comfort, and honor human dignity. A diverse group of people, they are united as a people of conscience and faith to render humanitarian aid to migrants in distress. Most days, water and food is left in places where it will be most likely to do good. On occasion, Samaritans have face to face encounters with the current manifestation of the man who lay beside the road while the Pharisee passed him by. They stand in for the Good Samaritan who refused to leave that man on the side of the road to die, even though he was of a different nation. Sometimes the Samaritans are in time to offer life-saving aid, and sometimes all they can offer is answers to the families of those who did not survive the journey. It is a difficult work, both physically and emotionally; they must not only endure the effort of bringing aid, but must also bear sacred witness when their help is too late. They remind us that it is never illegal to provide food, water and medical assistance to another human being. When we lose sight of that, we lose sight of our own humanity. As they stand in for the Samaritan in Jesus's story, let us seek our hearts for where we stand.
Día 6 de 40 Desde Julio del 2002, las botas de los Samaritanos han estado golpeando los senderos del desierto de Sonora, independientemente de si es una fría mañana de Febrero o un día caluroso de Julio. Caminando por el mismo terreno accidentado que sus hermanos y hermanas inmigrantes, esperan poder ofrecer alivio, comodidad y dignidad. Un grupo diverso de personas, se unen de conciencia y de fe para prestar ayuda humanitaria a los inmigrantes en peligro. La mayoría de los días, el agua y la comida se dejan en lugares donde es más probable que hagan falta. En ocasiones, los Samaritanos tienen encuentros cara a cara con la manifestación actual del personas al lado del camino. Ellos representan al Buen Samaritano que se negó dejar a ese hombre echado en el camino para morir. A veces los Samaritanos llegan justo a tiempo para ofrecer ayuda la cual salva vidas. Hay otras ocasiones en donde todo lo que pueden ofrecer es respuestas a las familias de aquellos que no sobrevivieron al viaje. Es un trabajo difícil, tanto física como emocionalmente; no solo deben aguantar el esfuerzo que implica llevar ayuda, sino que también deben dar testimonio sagrado cuando su ayuda es demasiada tarde. Nos recuerdan que nunca es un crimen proporcionar alimentos, agua y asistencia médica a otro ser humano. Cuando perdemos eso de vista, perdemos la vista de nuestra propia humanidad. Ellos representan al Samaritano en la historia de Jesús y nos recuerdan que debemos demostrar amor en donde quiera que vayamos.
