My name is Chelsea Privette, and I am a Ph.D. student in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at the University of Arizona and the president of Frontera Wesley.
"We need to be a voice for the voiceless."
It sounds really good, to be a voice for the voiceless. It's quite poetic. It sounds like a good deed. I see why people say it so much. But what does it really communicate? It communicates that there is a "voiceless." But, everyone has a voice. The question is, are you listening? If you think you need to speak for someone else, I'm going to guess that you're not. People on the margins do not need anyone to speak for them; they need for people to listen. We speak in many ways and in many places - in the streets, in the classroom, in the workplace, in all of the places where people turn a deaf ear and insist that their way of speaking is better than ours. It's just another way to control the narrative - a narrative that is not yours to tell. It's hard to see that you're not doing the best thing for people in the margins by talking for them when everyone listens to you. What you say has influence, and you may get some things done. But if the people you are speaking for do not have a say in what happens as a result of your words, then your good intentions actually have the potential to cause harm. So, if you have some privilege - white privilege, documented privilege, male privilege, or educational privilege - use your privilege to pass the mic. We can speak just fine for ourselves, thank you.

Suena realmente bien, ser la voz de las minorías . Es bastante poético. Parece una buena acción. Veo por qué la gente lo dice mucho. Pero, ¿qué es lo que realmente comunica? Comunica que hay un "mudo". Pero, todos tienen una voz. La pregunta es, ¿estás escuchando? Si crees que necesitas hablar por alguien más, voy a adivinar que no. La gente en los márgenes no necesita que nadie hable en su favor; necesitan que la gente escuche. Hablamos de muchas maneras y en muchos lugares: en las calles, en el aula, en el lugar de trabajo, en todos los lugares donde las personas hacen oídos sordos e insisten en que su forma de hablar es mejor que la nuestra. Es solo otra manera de controlar la narración, una narración que no es suya para contar. Es difícil ver que no estás haciendo lo mejor para las personas de los márgenes hablando por ellos cuando todos te escuchan. Lo que dices tiene influencia y puedes hacer algunas cosas.
