My name is Marygrace Ghio I am a DACAmented student. I was born in Peru and have been in the US for almost 15 years. I'm involved in Scholarships A-Z as the scholarship coordinator.
“This immigration movement is led by men.”
No. This is not the case because every time I think of immigrant women and all that they sacrifice for their families, it always ties back to this movement. Women create life and also create movements. Every time there is a sense of injustice I feel like immigrant women always call it out, in particular undocumented women. Undocumented women sacrifice so much. There is so much that they hide - they never show fear to all the repressive systems in place; they don’t show fear to what's coming their way. I know a lot of women in the movement who, even in the movement, and especially those from a Latinx background, experience machismo; they are still able to overcome. For example, the women I work with are constantly pushing the administration and they're making an impact and in some ways they sacrifice their safety for others to thrive - whether they are our mothers or students who call out bs at the U of A by stating their status. They put themselves out there so they can create resources to help everyone else. This is why I think women lead this movement. A lot of the time the men are there to support but its been very few times that I’ve seen them be vocal. When they have been vocal its been in support of the women. I have not seen any men lead a movement; they are there to help and empower, but they don’t fight back the same way women do. Black and brown women create movements because white men create barriers.

No. Este no es el caso porque cada vez que pienso en mujeres inmigrantes y todo lo que sacrifican por sus familias, siempre lo relaciono con este movimiento. Las mujeres crean vida y también crean movimientos. Cada vez que hay una sensación de injusticia siento que las mujeres inmigrantes siempre les llaman la atención, en particular las mujeres indocumentadas. Las mujeres indocumentadas sacrifican tanto, hay tanto que esconden, nunca muestran temor a todos los sistemas opresivos en su lugar, no muestran temor a lo que viene en su camino. Conozco a muchas mujeres en el movimiento que, incluso que dentro de el movimiento y especialmente aquellas de origen latinoamericano, experimentan el machismo, y ante todo eso son capaces de superar. Por ejemplo, las mujeres con las que trabajo presionan constantemente a la administración y están haciendo un gran impacto, y ellas sacrifican su seguridad para que otros prosperen; ya sean nuestras madres o estudiantes que reclaman la porqueria de la Universidad de Arizona. Se ponen en riesgo para que puedan crear recursos que ayudaria a todos los demás. Es por eso que creo que las mujeres lideran este movimiento. Una gran parte del tiempo los hombres están allí para apoyar, pero ha sido muy pocas veces que los he visto vocalizar. Cuando han sido vocales ha sido en apoyo de las mujeres. No he visto a ningún hombre liderar un movimiento, ellos están allí para ayudar y empoderar, pero no luchan de la misma manera que las mujeres. Mujeres de color crean movimientos porque los hombres blancos crean barreras.
